- College Corner: Natural (and Cost Effective!) Ways to Treat Dry Itchy Scalp
Cold weather, dry itchy skin and scalp? We’re so over it. But, since we can’t all check out of this season completely, we’ve compiled a few natural ways to combat dry, flaky scalp and skin. The best part is that all you’ll have to do is take a stroll to your kitchen, since all the necessary ingredients can be found there. For college students, this list is the Holy Grail; since all of the products work double (or even triple!) duty!
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): This kitchen staple has tons of health benefits, including soothing dry itchy scalp conditions. Simply combine the vinegar with water and rub onto your scalp before or after washing or co-washing to sooth the irritation. A plus: The vinegar also clarifies your scalp to prevent product buildup that can lead to irritated scalp. One college cutie, Simone Mayes, from Jacksonville, FL, swears by ACV. Simone says, “Every winter my scalp gets so dry and irritated. I wish I found out about apple cider vinegar years ago because it really soothing.”
- Peppermint Oil: The PH level in peppermint oil helps to prevent scalp dryness and neutralizes oil production. The result? Fast relief to an itchy scalp.
- Coconut Oil: This yummy smelling oil is officially not just for cooking. It is an excellent moisturizer and can even combat bacteria because of its excellent antifungal properties. Either melt in the microwave or let it melt on your hands and rub into your scalp and hair. College senior Synie Medlin, from Dallas, TX, does just that. Sydnie says, ““I use coconut oil to cook and to moisturize my skin and scalp, it is amazing.”
- Tea Tree Oil: This is another great oil to fight bacteria on the scalp. Just add a little to your shampoo or conditioner and enjoy the tingly benefits.
- Sugar Scrubs: Just mix brown sugar with olive oil and you’ve got yourself an exfoliating scrub that is perfect for dry flaky scalp. Section your hair and rub it in gently just before you wash and you’ll have a refreshed scalp in no time.
Dry itchy scalp is no fun, and this polar vortex is only making it worse. Try out these remedies to fight back (and keep praying for Spring to make its return asap)!
